Elaine Gilbert Getchell, age 96, passed away in her sleep, surrounded by all her children, Thursday evening at Kitty Askins Hospice Center. Born in Dexter, Maine, she was the daughter of the late Horace and Elizabeth Batey Gilbert and the wife of the late Dr. Robert W. Getchell. At age 14, Mrs. Getchell began an 80-year career as church organist at First Baptist Church in Dexter, Maine. For many years she served as organist for several churches in the Goldsboro, NC community to include First Presbyterian Church, Adamsville Baptist Church and Pinewood Presbyterian Church. She continued her career at First Christian Church in Goldsboro as organist and choir director for 30 years. After retirement, she was a member of First Baptist Church in Goldsboro where she was privileged to play the organ on several occasions.
A celebration of her life will be held on Tuesday at 3:00 pm at First Baptist Church with Dr. Glenn Phillips, Jr. and Rev. Dr. Penny Zeimer officiating. The family will visit with family and friends immediately following the service in the church fellowship hall. A private burial will be held at Evergreen Memorial Cemetery.
Mrs. Getchell is survived by her son, Robert M. Getchell of Goldsboro; her daughter, Susan Elizabeth Dodson of Pikeville; grandchildren, Joshua Dodson, Amanda Evans, Sarah (Tim) Martin and Christopher Sullivan; two great grandchildren, Claire and Colbie.

Bobby, Linda and I am so sorry to hear of this. We just got back in the country and so sorry we missed Elaine’s service, our prayers are with you. Elaine was a blessing to all who knew her and especially those previlaged to hear her play the piano and organ.
