Gerry Norman Phelps, Sr., age 81, passed away Saturday at Kitty Askins Hospice Center. Born in Hanover, New Hampshire, he was the son of the late Earl Edward Phelps and Clara Kibbie Phelps. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Arthur Phelps and sister, Louise Milne.
A member of Providence United Methodist Church, Gerry was retired from the U.S. Navy after 22 years of service.
Doc was a US Navy Corpsman with direct attachment to the US Marine Corps, 3rd MarDiv. He was a decorated Combat Vietnam Veteran. His medals, awards, and accomplishments include: Navy/Marine Corps Combat Action Ribbon, Vietnam Service Medal (2 Stars) w/Fleet Marine Force Combat Operations Insignia, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal w/Device (1960-), Vietnam Gallantry Cross w/Palm, Authorized 2nd Award National Defense Service Ribbon, Anartic Service Medal, Navy Unit Commendation Award, and 5 Good Conduct Awards.
Doc was a long standing member of the Wayne County Veterans & Patriots Coalition and the Goldsboro/Wayne Purple Heart Foundation. He was most proud to serve the Coalition in the position of Sgt @ Arms, and took honor to Sound Taps at all programs, events, and funerals. Doc was very proud to serve as Liasion Officer for the Coalition in all support activities to Wounded Warrior Battalion-East at Camp Lejeune, NC. He faithfully served offices in The American Legion Wayne Post 11, Veterans of Foreign Wars Goldsboro Post 2615, Marine Corps League Waynesborough Detachment 1350, Fleet Reserve Association Tar River Branch 204, The Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 892, and the Disabled American Veterans Wayne Chapter 45.
A service to celebrate Gerry’s life will be held Saturday at 1:00 pm at Providence United Methodist Church with Rev. James Huskins officiating.
Gerry is survived by his wife of 59 years, Jeanne Phelps; a son, Gerry (Christina) Phelps, Jr.; a daughter, Lisa Phelps; a sister, Susan Lemay; four grandchildren, Gerry Phelps, III, Daniel Phelps, Matthew Phelps and Thomas Phelps.
The family has requested in lieu of flowers that contributions be made in Gerry's Honor to the Wayne County Veterans & Patriots Coalition to support the Memorial Day Flag and Wreaths Across America programs, Wayne County Veterans & Patriots Coalition, Inc., Brian Volk, Treasurer, 2001-D East Ash Street, Goldsboro, NC 27534
